My puppy pees right after leaving the crate. How can I stop this?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 2 months and 5 days old | 160 lbs

I have had good success with potty training thus far except when I let Rogue out after being in the crate. As soon as the crate opens, he pees before we even get outside. Rogue hasn’t peed or pooped in her cage since I got him 2 weeks ago which is good, but how do I stop that pee once outside the crate before we get outside?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Excitement urination is common in puppies, which it sounds like you are describing. When you get home, don't say anything or acknowledge Rogue in any way. Walk over to his crate, open it, then walk immediately to the door and outside. Once outside, say the phrase you have been using for housetraining (do your business, etc). Once he has gotten up from completely eliminating, then lay on the praise and attention. This will help improve his control and decrease accidents as he grows. Good luck!

This is not unusual behavior for a puppy. They typically outgrow the behavior. This link may also help: https://www.petcoach.co/article/submissive-excitement-urination-how-to-control-it/ I hope this helps.

Use a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffusers, to decrease anxiety. When he comes out of the crate, take him straight outside to urinate. Don't make a big deal when taking him out. Simply let him out. Praise and reward him when he urinates outside. If he is worked up when he comes out of the crate, ignore him completely until he settles down. Be firm and be consistent.
