My dog has mucousy diarrhea. Should I see a vet or try home care?

My 23 lb mixed breed dog has had diarrhea since last night and today it has become mucousy. Should I consider taking him to the vet? Or should I try maybe rice, pumpkin or anti diarrhea liquid?

I'm sorry Charlie isn't doing well! I can give you a home remedy to try first to see if that helps, and if it doesn't, then yes I would take him into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Snow, unless it had some dirty stuff in it, wouldn't cause diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy for Charlie to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6-8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

My dog is having massive diaherria and hasn’t stopped and he poops 4 times every hour and I don’t know what to do anymore
Diarrhea is what happens when the intestine wants to get rid of something very fast....it then pushes ingesta and poop out quickly without letting it rest in the colon where normally the colon pulls out fluid and makes the poop firm. That said, diarrhea can have many causes such food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Charlie for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

We fed our dog an extra cup of food yesterday and he had liquid diarrhea this morning. Would an extra cup of food cause that?
Hello. An extra cup is not the cause of Charlie's diarrhea. Could he have gotten into something else or eaten something outdoors? Hold him off food for 12 hours & then start him back on a bland diet of 75% white rice ( not Minute Rice ) & 25% cooked chicken. You can also try an antidiarrheal such as Proviable KP ( available at larger pet retailers ). If the diarrhea does not subside in24-36 hrs. or Charlie starts vomiting, act lethargic or refuses all food & water, please have him evaluated by your veterinarian quickly. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Charlie! Blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon and we usually like to start dogs on antibiotics when they have blood in the stool. If Charlie is acting normal, not vomiting and is eating I think he can wait for your Vet to open tomorrow. If he is vomiting and not acting normal you should take him in an emergency hospital. The causes for diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, new treat, food or table scraps, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. Most of the time we do not ever know the underlying cause. If the diarrhea is bad then fast him for 12-24 hours, do not limit water. Then resume feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 days of normal stools. I hope this helps and I wish Charlie a speedy recovery!
