Why is my 7-month-old Lab chewing his paw bald? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 16 days old | 50 lbs

My 7 month old Labrador retriever is chewing his paw. Has a bald spot. I'm thinking it is because he is bored in his crate during day when we are at work. He is a heavy chewer and goes through toys. What should I do?

It looks like the paw is irritated and possibly infected. This is caused by him licking and chewing at it. I would recommend taking Prince to a veterinarian. Here they can evaluate the paw and potentially do a skin scrape (looking for mites) to rule this out. It could also be from some type of irritation and Prince just started chewing it. The original cause may never be found. I would recommend an elizabethan collar until you can get Prince to a veterinarian. This is so he cannot lick the area and make it worse. He will most likely need antibiotics and depending on what the skin scrape says will depend if they need other medications. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
