Kitten's foot swollen and painful. Is aspirin safe for pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1lb

My kittens foot is very swollen and he cannot walk on it. I'm pretty sure on the cause (ingrown nail or puncture from my other cat playing too rough with him) but I don't want him to be in pain during the entire healing process. How can I do that? Can I give him very small amounts of asprin or baby asprin?

No, please don't give your cat over the counter medications. Cats are extremely sensitive to them and you will not be able to get a dose small enough for a 1 pound cat. It is not recommended you give any medicines over the counter. If this was from an ingrown nail then he will need some antibiotics. It is likely infected which is why it is swollen. He really needs to see a vet for this issue. That way he can get the proper treatment. In the meantime you can soak the foot in an Epsom salt bath for 5 minutes 2-3 times per day. This may allow the infection to come to the surface and open. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

You need to take him to the vet ASAP, he is probably suffering from a serious abscess which is causing the swelling and the pain, he will probably need it to be lanced and drain, he will also need a course of antibiotics.
