My dog has kidney disease. Should I stop eggshell powder with Ipakitine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

Hi, I've been giving my dog a homemade diet since he was diagnosed with kidney disease and supplemented it with a little eggshell powder which acted as his calcium. The vet has now given a phosphate binder called ipakitine and in the ingredients it says it contains calcium carbonate. Do I stop giving the eggshell powder now as this ipakitine contains calcium? Thanks

Yes exactly. You don’t want to oversupplement so you can stop the egg shells. Epakitin is a great phosphate binder and will help lower Chico’s toxic levels of phosphorous in his body. I hope his disease is managed well soon. Best wishes and take care.
