Why is my dog panicking, barking, and peeing after steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 17 years and 11 months old

My dog suddenly woke up last night barking in a panic. She then urinated all over the floor and continued to pace round looking terrified. I happened again approx 7 hours later. She has recently been to the vets and received steroids cause she had a bad stomach. So was wondering if this would be a side effect of the drugs of if there is something worse happening?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Marvis! Steroids can cause personality changes: some animals become aggressive, some more sedate, is causes increased thirst and urination and panting. I am concerned though that Marvis is having seizures. Video tape an episode if it happens again and pay attention if he loses consciousness during the episode. Another possibility is that she is painful. I would at a minimum call your Vet today to discuss this but I think she should be looked at again. I hope this helps and I wish Marvis the best!
