Puppy ate new food, now has bloody diarrhea. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 10 days old | 11 lbs

I had my mother watch Raegan 2 days ago and she ate her dogs food instead of her own. She feeds her dog purina moist meaty. I feed raegan blue buffalo puppy. Today Raegan started a bout of diarrhea which is resulting in her crying to be let out to release in the middle of the night. This last movement had a bit of blood in it. Would the cause be eating poor quality food for one meal? Is there an immediate concern to take her to see a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Raegan! Having diarrhea secondary to eating a different brand of food is common. I don't think it has to do with the brand but more with Raegan being more sensitive to abrupt food changed than other dogs. The blood commonly occurs with severe diarrhea, it indicated inflammation in the colon. When blood appears in the stool I think it is best to have the pet seen and antibiotics started (metronidazole). Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion and the obvious food intolerance. I feel it is best to have her seen before the weekend but if you can't get her in then I recommend fasting her for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract then restart feeding with a bland diet. Boil chicken or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs and feed the diet until 2 normal stools then slowly transition her back to her dry food. I hope this helps and I wish Raegan and speedy recovery!
