My dog has a thick gray layer on her eye. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 18 days old

Hi, I was playing with my dog and I lifted her up in the air than I notice she had something in her right eye I put her closer to the light, over her right eye is a thick layer of something it's covering a nice amount of her eye but she does not seem to be in any pain it looks clear than again it looks a bit gray it's a circle the size of a dime maybe nickel she's a chihuahua so she has really big eyes. Is this something I should worry about? Would you please help me find out what this could be?

A young dog like Penelope should not have anything covering her eye. The only thing I can think of with your description may be her third eyelid? Pleas google images of a dogs third eyelid and see if that looks like what you saw. If not then I would really encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

It is difficult to say what Penelope has without seeing her. You can always upload up to 3 photos for us to see which would be helpful in a situation like this. Otherwise you can always bring her to your veterinarian to have her evaluated. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

This could by just a discharge that has created a film over the eye, or it could be something more sinister like a corneal abrasion or ulcer. If it does not resolve in the next 1-2 days, I recommend you have Penelope checked out by your veterinarian.
