What vaccinations are recommended for my 18-year-old senior dog?

What if any vaccinations do you recommend for an 18yr old 60lb lab/hound mix

At Ozzy's age I recommend the rabies vaccine, distemper and bordetella. If you live in an area with high rates of lyme disease or leptospirosis then you would still want to continue those as well. If rates are low however, you may be able to discontinue these. Its best to discuss risk vs benefits with your veterinarian. Please post again if you have any further questions.

    These are what I would suggest as "required": 1. Rabies 2. Distemper/Parvo 5 -way 3. Leptospirosis Booster the #2 and #3 three to four weeks after the initial vaccination; rabies does not require a booster. Then continue with them all once yearly. If you plan to take him to any boarding facilities, dog training, grooming, dog parks, etc then you should also get the Bordetella vaccination (kennel cough). If you are in a Lyme disease endemic area you should probably do that vaccine as well. If you do all of these I suggest you split them up over a few weeks time and not do them all at once.

That is a great question. Vaccinations and the benefits and risks should be discussed with your veterinarian. This is best because your veterinarian knows your pets medical history and whether all the vaccinations are still ok to do based on your pets immune system and current health. Another thing to take into account is your pets exposure to certain diseases. Most pets at least go outside to potty, so that scenario can expose your pet to certain diseases like leptospirosis (found in rainwater and the soil) and distemper (mimics rabies symptoms). And if your pet gets groomed periodically or goes to doggy daycamps or parks, then the Bordetella vaccination would be recommended to protect them from upper airway infections. Rabies however is the only legally required vaccination by law for pets to get. I hope that this information is helpful. Best of luck moving forward.

I have a 9 year old dog who has never had any shots. Is it too late or is he too old to get vaccinated?
No, he isn't too old to be vaccinated. A rabies vaccine can be given and boosted in 1 year, then every 3 years. The distemper/parvovirus combination (DHPP) can be given, then boosted in 4 weeks. After that, it can be yearly or every 3 years depending on the vaccine. Other vaccines, given based on risk of exposure, include Bordatella, Leptospirosis, Lyme and Canine Influenza. Discuss these as well as monthly heartworm, parasite, flea and tick preventatives. Consider having Fatty neutered as well.

Hello. Adult dogs should be kept current on their Rabies vaccination, Distemper/hepatitis/leptospirosis/parainfluenza/parvo vaccines. Depending on their lifestyle, Bordetella and Influenza may be recommended. These would be important for dogs that board at kennel facilities, go to groomers or frequent dog parks. Hello. A lot depends on what might be considered a problem in your area. For example, there have only been sporadic outbreaks across the country of Canine Influenza, & Lymes Disease is more of an issue east of the Mississippi. The AVMA considers the core or necessary vaccinations Rabies, Distemper, Adenovirus & Parvovirus, all of which can be given every 1, 2 or 3 years. My ten-year-old dogs haven't been vaccinated in 5 years they never travel but I am going to start walking them and taking them to dog parks should I vaccinate them again and do I give them a booster
It depends on what vaccines they have had. Rabies and Distemper do not likely need to be bolstered. Leptospirosis or Lyme likely need to be. It depends on the type of Bordetella vaccine being used if it will need a vaccine. Yes, absolutely get the dogs caught back up on vaccines and I recommend to have them on a flea and heartworm prevention (pick Interceptor or Heartgard as they have the best protect against intestinal worms) too as stuff like that (no heartworms but intestinal worms) are often found at dog parks. hello - I have an 8-yr old Shih Tzu/Poodle that has not had any shots. This is the first time we have done this with one of our dogs - I don't know why, but I want to have her "prepped" for the late stages in her life...What shots would be necessary
Hello! For starters, she should have "core" vaccines - DAPP and Rabies. DAPP (distemper/parvo) - Since she is an adult, a single DAPP vaccine will be sufficient for at least 1 year. After 1 year, your vet may recommend checking titers ( a blood test to check for immunity) rather than re-vaccinating after only 1 year. Or, your vet may feel comfortable with considering that single vaccine a 3 year vaccine, or may recommend a booster after 1 year. Rabies- a 1 year Rabies should be given. Another rabies vaccine needs to be given after 1 year..... that 2nd rabies vaccine can be a 3 year vaccine. Beyond that, talk to your vet. Further vaccination recommendations are based on what is of greatest concern in your area, and on what her lifestyle is like. Rabies vaccine is a must, and a distemper/ parvovirus combination is important too. Other vaccines such as Lyme, influenza. and bordetella depend on where you are in the country and what your dogs life style is. It is not too late for vaccines. Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Discuss your dog's lifestyle. Together, you can determine which vaccine protocol is best for your dog. At the very least your dog should get a rabies vaccine and a distemper/parvovirus combo vaccine. He may require boosters 4 weeks after the initial vaccines. Consider a heartworm test and fecal as well. Monthly preventatives are also strongly recommended.

I understand pets must have vaccinations just like humans however, there is a such thing as over vaccination. How come I have to continuously get annual and semiannual shots for my now 4 year old Labrador? I understand the county mandate for a yearly
Vaccination is not an exact science and for some diseases in particular long term immunity is not generated and pets become at risk as immunity wanes. There is a fine balance between likelihood of exposure, severity of disease and anticipated length of immunity from vaccines. Some vaccines are licensed for use every 3 years, others have only been proven to be protective for 12 months . I recommend discussing local and individual risk factors with your own vet for a tailored plan
