My 45-day-old puppy got a distemper vaccine too early. Is he safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | 1 month and 16 days old

I have a 45 days old golden retriever and he was given the vaccination that he was supposed to take at the age of 1 year. He took the vaccination exactly a week ago, (30/11/2017). I’m scared that Canine Distemper would strike my puppy and lead him to death. Any thoughts and advices ? Note that until now my puppy is totally fine, eating normally and he seems to have normal energy, able to run and play around.

When you are discussing vaccinations I am assuming you are referring to the distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, parainfluenza combination vaccine (DAPP). If Theodore is only about 6 weeks old he will need at least 3-4 more DAPP vaccines spaced approximately one month apart to be fully protected against distemper. Because Theodore will be at risk until he receives all of his distemper booster shots it is best to minimize his risk by not taking him to places where sick dogs may have been. So avoiding dog parks, pet stores, and kennels is a good idea. I would recommend starting veterinary visits for Theodore around 8 weeks of age so he can be examined and another DAPP vaccine can be given. Please remember to bring a fecal sample with you to the vet visit so he can be checked for intestinal parasites. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and good luck with Theodore!
