There are many causes of diarrhea including (but not limited to) intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, food sensitivities, endocrine disease, internal organ issues, dietary indiscretion, and unfortunately in some cases, cancer. A bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice can be offered to see if that helps slow the diarrhea. However, if it persists longer than 24 hours or any other signs are noted like vomiting, inappetance, or lethargy then Cody should be examined by a veterinarian. The longer the diarrhea persists the more likely a dog will become dehydrated. Diarrhea that doesn't resolve quickly often requires prescription medication to treat. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Cody is feeling better soon!
