My dog shows diabetes signs. How do vets test and diagnose it?

Hi there and thank you for posting your question. A fasting blood glucose level is often almost enough to diagnose diabetes. I will usually confirm with a urinalysis. However, many veterinarians also use a test called fructosamine to help make the diagnosis. Digs with diabetes drink a lot of water, they urinate frequently, and in the beginning they are very hungry. As they become more sick the appetite decreases and the weight loss becomes significant.     Poor girl. A lot of endocrine disorders can present with the same symptoms of increased urination, eating and drinking; however diabetes is the top suspect. Diabetes is tested with a urinalysis and bloodwork analysis through your vet, so yes this can absolutely be tested for an confirmed. There is no over the counter test for diabetes. Schedule and appt with your vet soon to have the necessary testing done. Best of luck to you and your pet. Take care.
