How to help my dog with dry, itchy skin, chewing, and bad odor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 8 years and 11 months old | 100 lbs

So my fiance's dad uses regular lotion to help keep his dogs skin from being so dry, and everything I could find was saying that this isn't a good idea. She constantly chews at herself and I think it's making her sick. And also he uses baby wipes to clean her. She has allergies so that doesn't help either. What could we do to maybe stop the odor from being so bad? And her to stop chewing herself cause she cuts herself open from excessive chewing and scratching.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach. Regular lotion is not the best idea because of added chemicals and other products that can harm the skin or dry it out. I recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo to help strengthen the skin and prevent dandruff. I also recommend using essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and welactin omega 3 fish oil capsules. I would bathe with the shampoo twice weekly. All of these can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
