Why is my old rabbit incontinent with matted fur and hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | spayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 3.5 lbs

My mini rex is 10 yrs old. She is blind in both eyes and in the past 6 months no longer uses her litterbox. Her poop and pee gets matted in her fur. We soak her bum once a week, but honestly she needs it once daily and we just can’t keep up. Her mobility has lessened quite a bit over the last 6 momths as well. Just this past week all the hair on her inner hind leg came off. Is that from urine iritation? (Our vet told us last summer she was just really old and would likely die soon.)

It sounds like Mittens maybe isn’t living the quality of life that you may want for her. I would encourage you to consider discussing this with your veterinarian. It sounds like euthanasia may be appropriate at this time. Making these decisions is always very difficult. I am so sorry about Mittens. Take care.
