What should I do when my dog's infection scab is falling off?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Karelian Bear Dog | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 11 months old

Hello, My dog has a scab from a infection about two and a half weeks ago. The infection is gone now and we have left the scab, but it's now starting to fall off. It's not off yet (maybe a quarter ways) and I will be leaving it, but I would like to know how I could deal with it. At the moment I have been using a cream called Silon (Zinc oxide+dimethicone?) and wonder if that is is fine to continue on it. I don't know if I can use it on the scab if it falls off though.

Hello and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your question about Bastian. If the scabs are falling off and the skin no longer appears inflamed, I think you can stop using the ointment. Leave the scab alone as they are nature's band aides. They will eventually separate from the skin and you can comb them out of the fur. No need to treat the skin once the infection is gone. Please post again if you have any further questions!
