How do I know if my young cockatiel is a male or female bird?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

Hi! I have bought a cokcatiel named cheeko:) the shopkeeper said its a 5 months old male bird but im not sure:( As they said for a child bird the tail must be solid to be a male and must have some dots or lines to be a female. But in internet they said it face must be colourfull to be a male but mine is not! Please tell me if it is male or female. Special thanks

Hi, Chicko may be a male, but since he’s so young, his light orange cheek teaches may need time to brighten as he reached sexual maturity. However, the solid vs batted tail feathers you refer to is also an accurate way to tell the difference. However, I would need to see the underside of the tail feathers (not the top). If the the underside is speckled or barred, then Chicko would be female, if feathers are solid then should be male. The cheek patches should brighten in time with maturity. I hope this helps!
