My dog eats too fast and regurgitates whole food. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 months and 12 days old | 6.4 lbs

Oliver has recently stopped chewing his dry food and just scarfs it down whole. Maybe a half hour later, he reguritates (not vomits) some undigested food (with a some mucuous) back up. Would adding water to his food help him keep it down, or should I feed him in smaller portions to slow his fast eating. (He used to scarf his food down a regurgitate it when he was 2 months old, but he started chewing his food and his reguritation stopped).

Since he is so young and this isn't the first time he has regurgitated I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Oliver. There are congenital issues that can actually cause an animal to regurgitate. Your veterinarian may want to do some chest X-rays to rule in or out these abnormalities. I would just make sure that he is actually regurgitating not vomiting since the list of differentials would be different for both. In the mean time you can try watering down Oliver's food so he has to chew it more and potentially sit him up after he eats. You can also add some wet food to the dry food to see if that helps. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
