Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 28 days old | 12.6 lbs

Have had my GSD puppy for 3 weeks now and he has had off and on loose stools since I’ve had him, is this normal? The breeder took him to the vet and found out he had coccidia, we finished his medication, he is still gaining weight and has a very healthy appetite

This is not normal. I would have your vet recheck his stool to ensure all the coccidia is gone and no other parasites are present. I would also consider having him checked for giardia. Also, make sure he is on a high quality puppy food like science diet or royal canin. Some of these more expensive, “high protein, grain trees” food can be too rich for them. At his age he really only needs dry kibble. Canned food and milk can also cause an upset stomach and be too rich for him. Finally make sure he isn’t getting into anything like eating dirt, bugs, etc as these things can also cause diarrhea. He may need a probiotic to help balance his normal bacteria. I would talk to your vet about a good suggestion for his age and weight and current health. I hope this helps!

Hello, a little bit of softer stool can be normal whenever there is a diet change, including when weaning. Their GI tracts are adjusting to something other than milk! However, completely runny diarrhea is *not* normal and would be cause for concern, particularly in small puppies who can dehydrate quickly. Anytime I have a puppy with soft stool I recommend having a fecal sample checked by a vet to look for intestinal parasites - in this case one added benefit being that your vet can tell you if the coccidia was completely treated or if they're still seeing some remain. I hope this helps!
