Is flying an FeLV positive cat safe? Will stress worsen its health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Dear vet, I am considering adopting a felv positive cat. However, in order to be adopted by me, the cat must be transported to me by airplane. The cat seems strong and healthy and has not shown any symptoms of disease so far. However, I read that stress may trigger / aggravate the disease and I can only imagine how stressful such a long journey and flight must be to a cat. He has very low chances at being adopted in Spain, but I don't want to put him at any unnecessary risk. What do you think?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think if you are this cats best chance then you are a lower risk than him staying in Spain and not be adopted or euthanized. You are correct the stress of transport may make him sick, but he could be fine. I say give him the chance! And thank you for caring for him! Have a great day and I wish you the best!
