Puppy cries when mom leaves or left alone. Is it separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I’ve sold my puppies exept 1 which I’m keeping and every time her mother leaves her she starts crying and barking she didn’t do this when the other puppies where there she would just snuggle up with them and go to sleep or play but now she cries and when I let lady out (she likes to roam) my puppy coco is always at my ankles sometimes I nearly step on her and if she’s left alone for even one second she starts screaming I’m getting really annoyed and I’m just wandering why and how long will last?

Congratulations on your puppy Coco. It sounds like she may be dealing with stress and maybe even separation anxiety following the departure of her siblings. This should calm down over time, over the next month I would expect her to feel more and more settled. I will suggest a few ways to help her cope below. I am very sorry that you are experiencing these issues with Coco. I will suggest a few tactics to help you both have some peace. The key is to helping Coco feel safe and secure at home, increasing exercise to help with anxiety and also increasing mental stimulation. Allowing her to stay with her mother as much as you can while she adjusts Increased exercise (think fetch indoors) Chew toys Puzzle toys Interactive games like fetch and hide and go seek Leaving the TV, a fan or a White House generating machine on DAP- dog appeasing pheromone releasing diffusers Thunder coats Here are some further resources to help you, but also feel free to ask me any for their questions here on the forum. https://www.petcoach.co/article/10-ways-to-stimulate-your-dog-s-brain/ https://www.petcoach.co/article/7-ways-to-make-sure-your-dog-feels-safe-in-your-home/ https://www.petcoach.co/article/10-signs-your-dog-is-stressed/
