Why is my dog's muzzle scab bleeding? Crate rub or skin condition?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dutch Shepherd | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 60 lbs

Last week River had a tiny scab on her muzzle. Each it has gotten progressively worse until now its the size of a pea. She sleeps in a crate at night and i always notice the change as she is released in the morning. Today there were what appears to be small scratches and there was a bit of blood. It does not seem to bother her in any way, and i have not seen her do anything to cause it. I'm wondering if it a skin condition that needs treatment or if she is rubbing her face against the crate

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. Judging from the photos, it is possible that this is due to trauma or infection. I would recommend using a topical medication called Zymox topical ointment and apply to the affected areas twice daily until resolved. If they worsen or do not resolve, then I would recommend having your veterinarian take a look at the affected areas for further testing and treatment recommendations. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
