Dog has hives, itching, no appetite. Is it shampoo, food, or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 60 lbs

My dog suffers from full body hives, excessive itching, redness of skin & loss of appetite. The "hives" possibly could be caused from usage of human shampoo "Sulfur8" that aids with dandruff and it has gotten progressively worse as the days pass, also her loss of appetite could possibly be caused by a recent change in dog food brand "Pedigree". Would these two changes be a reason for her symptoms, or may this be something more serious? Also what is your best recommended (all natural) remedy?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dollag looks like she has a skin infection. She could have microscopic mites, a bacterial, or a yeast infection. I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam and to test the skin for the above things. I would stop using human shampoo as dogs skin and ours have different pH levels and can make things much worse. The decreased appetite could be from the diet change or because her skin is so uncomfortable. At this point in time, there is nothing all natural you can do until the infection is cleared. After it is addressed you can talk to your vet about what caused the infection and ways to prevent them in the future. This may be medicated dog shampoos or other medications. Good luck and I hope Dollag gets relief soon!
