My Yorkie was attacked by a coyote. Puncture wounds & swelling. Vet needed?

Pet's info: Dog | Silky Terrier | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 11 lbs

I have a little Yorkie who is up to date on her rabies shot and was attacked by a coyote yesterday and now she's swelling up in the bite area she has two puncture wounds in her upper rib area. Do I take her into a vet or what should I watch for

Oh no, poor Hailey! I'm so sorry she was attacked by a coyote. This is a medical emergency, and she has to see a vet now. Coyotes have very strong bites, and she could have internal damage from the attack. This will also be very painful for her. Given that she is up to date on her rabies vaccine, I'm not concerned about that but I am concerned about internal injuries and pain. She needs veterinary care now, please take her into vet right away.

    You absolutely should take Hailey to your vet right away or any one that is open right now. There is a small concern for Rabies even after being vaccinated; but even more than that there is a good chance this area is infected already. She needs to have this wound properly flushed and antiseptically cleaned first and then placed on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. I hope Hailey is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Best wishes and take care.

Poor Tiny! I would be very concerned that she was attacked by a wild animal, and she should see a vet immediately. That's because wild animals carry diseases that can infect dogs, and she should have a booster of her rabies vaccine to be safe. In addition, she will need pain meds, and she should have her wounds treated. The vet can also check her over for internal injuries. Please bring her into a vet now.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that your Yorkie got attacked by another dog. He could absolutely have injuries that you cannot see, either to his muscle or spine/neck. If he is moving slower, he may have neck pain that hurts him when he moves. I recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian at their next available appointment, so he/she can perform a physical exam and localize any pain. Your vet can prescribe pain/anti-inflammatory medications that help your pet be more comfortable. If you cannot get him to the vet, I recommend keeping him rested (ie restricted to a crate) so he cannot hurt himself further. I hope this is helpful!

This sounds like an allergic reaction, they need absolutely an immediate veterinary check up and strong anti-inflammatory medications (steroids). This could turn in a life threatening systemic reaction.

My 10 week old puppy was attacked by another dog. No open wounds, but had some bleeding that almost immediately stopped from the nose. She has swelling around her eye socket and severely bloodshot eye. Minimal eye fluid came out and it was light pink
Your puppy looks like it is in serious pain. The eye also looks involved and it is possible the other dog bit your puppy behind the eye lid, which could be a reason for the blood from the nose. It would be best to have your puppy seen by a veterinarian preferably tonight. Brandy will need an exam to verify there is no eye damage, fracture of any of the facial bones. She will need prescription antibiotics, and pain medicine. This will likely swell up seriously and may also impede her breathing if there is an injury to the respiratory tract in the head.

Your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian today for wound control, possibly an x-ray to determine whether there is a joint problem. If wounds are found (small puncture wounds, for example, your dog will need antibiotics. I hope your dog is up to date on his rabies vaccination.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. She looks like she is experiencing some swelling in the face and is almost certainly in some pain. I understand that you don't have much money, but she almost certainly requires pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and antibiotics. The wounds on the face should be clipped around then cleaned with antiseptic in order to disinfect. Depending on the size of any wounds, they may need to be closed with stitches. Some veterinarians reserve medications and / or funding for situations like these that require need. You may also be eligible to apply for care credit. Here is the website. You need to take CoCo into a vet immediately. Given how small and young she is and how big the dog is that attacked her, she could easily have internal injuries. In addition, she is likely in pain and there are no OTC pain medications you can give. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Hi, our 7th-month-old husky was bitten at the dog park. Do you think we should take her to the emergency vet? Above the eye and cheek are the worst. And she has 3 punctures on her neck.
Oh, poor Ellie. Yes, I do think she should be seen by an emergency veterinarian. Most bite wounds will get infected, so much better to prevent it then having her get sick. Also, I am solute that she wound be much more comfortable with some pain medications. Speaking from experience, bite wounds hurt and even more so the day after! My dog got attacked by something then ran off and came back with more wounds. His legs and paws are swollen and he can barely sit. Drained one of the gashes and a lot of puss came out. Any advice?
Poor Cujo! He needs to see a vet immediately. He sounds like he is in a lot of pain if he can barely sit, the wounds are infected if pus is coming out, and he needs to be examined and x-rayed to make sure he doesn't have internal injuries. Do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to dog and are fatal if given. He needs immediate medical attention, please take him into a vet now.
