My dog has scabs & hair loss near tail after fleas. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 65 lbs

He had fleas but I got rid of them all and he has been constantly itching the area above his tail and it has scabs and a lot of the hair is gone so the area is very red and irritated. Plus his mood is totally different he just runs and hides. I would just like to know what to do and how to treat him.

Hi and thanks for posting! The area by Jax's tail looks red, inflamed, and infected looking. Sometimes when an area is infected, it can itch. I would recommend Jax see his veterinarian so he can get on some antibiotics. Until you can take Jax to his vet, I would recommend keeping the area clean with mild soap and water or a mild cleansing wipe a few times daily. I'd also recommend keeping Jax on a monthly flea preventative as fleas can come back even after a flea treatment and it only takes one flea to cause a severe flea allergy. Best of luck to you and Jax and I hope he is able to see his veterinarian soon!
