How to treat dog skin infection when antibiotics cause stomach upset?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 85 lbs

My dog has been on 5 rounds of cephalexin 500mg in order to treat the staff on his belly. He still has a small couple of red spots on his belly, and my vet said he needs to do another round of antibiotics in order to kill it. He has had diarrhea all week and hasn't been eating all of his food and throwing up some of it sometimes. He hasnt been feeling well from so long on antibiotics. Am I able to treat it with antibiotics and antimicrobial wash in place of another round of antibiotics?

Poor Simba. I would talk to your vet about trying a different type of antibiotics as these sound like they are causing an upset tummy. Also, be sure to tell your vet about his loose stool and decreased appetite in case he wants to start him on a probiotic or another medicine. You can try the medicated shampoo but it may take longer to heal and it may not completely heal. Talk to your vet about which shampoo he recommends. Also, talk to your vet about adding in an anti-histamine or other allergy medicines a lot of times allergies is what causes these skin infection. I have included an article about Benadryl below. Finally adding in omega 3 fatty acids can also help - see link. I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/ https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetri-science-laboratories-omega-3-6-9-dog-and-cat-gel-caps
