My puppy chases my cat. How can I stop him? Will he grow out of it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 4 months and 6 days old | 21 lbs

My puppy chases my cat every time the the cat comes around... we have tried sort of yelling at the dog and saying bad, but it’s almost like his instincts over take him and he wants to chase the cat. I don’t think he wants to hurt him, but he’s a puppy so he’s a little rough. Any tips on getting him to stop chasing the cat? Or is it something that he might grow out of once he’s an adult dog? Thanks!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Chasing behavior can be normal, especially in certain breeds of dogs. It is important for your cat to have a safe space to escape to; I typically recommend a baby gate at the base of a stairwell (if possible) to allow the cat to jump over to escape to an upstairs level when he needs to escape. It is something that may improve with time, or it may not. When Cash starts chasing the cat, I would recommend distracting him with a different game or toy to redirect his energy and focus his attention in a different direction. I hope these suggestions help!
