here again, my older cat with the lump also has been smacking his lips like crazy , throwing up hard car food so we've had to resort to wet and his back legs aren't the best , some days they are better than others but he often walks sideways. he was panting the other day and is way less energetic than usual.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. With your description, I would suspect the lip smacking is from nausea due to a systemic disease or infection. The abnormal walking could be something we call a diabetic neuropathy if this is diabetes. I would recommend that you have him examined by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to see if there are any changes they may help explain why he is having these symptoms.
