How to know if my sick cat is suffering and it's time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 15 years and 10 months old | 8 lbs

Toby has a mass around his ehart we discovered in May. He has now been vomiting blood here and there (still eating wet food), losing weight despite eating more, constant yowling, losing tufts of fur, trying to chew wires, I'm finding blood in the litter box, and general behavior he's never done. We've watched him closely through his ups and downs and now we wonder if he's suffering and if it is time to say goodbye.

I am very sorry that Toby is not feeling well. It is always hard to make that tough decision. I would recommend taking a hard look at his quality of life. I feel that a patient not being in pain, eating well, maintaining body weight and being happy is how I judge quality of life. If you feel that his quality is low it most likely is time to make that tough decision. I hope that helps.
