Why are my cats still scratching with bald spots after flea treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi ....I have two cats who recently had fleas....I have been treating them for 4 months now with advantage drops...I saw a flea on my hand the other day but none on them.....my one cat now has two bald spots...and the one spot is spreading ....My other cat has no bald spots but is scratching as biting himself non stop....I gave them both baths and saw no fleas...I don't know if the fleas are in the house but not biting them due to the drops....I am not sure if the bald spots are due to ring worm

A flea bite can cause itching and irritation for several weeks after the fleas are controlled. The majority of a flea problem is the environment. The fleas still have to get on the cats to bite and get the medicine to die, so you can still have a flea problem without seeing fleas on the cats. IF the spots and itching persist you will need to see a vet for a culture to diagnose ring worm. To get rid of the fleas you will need to get everyone out of the house and treat the house also
