Why does my dog have a painful lump on his hip he keeps licking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 85 lbs

I have a lab/pyrense mix he is 3 yrs. old and I noticed a knot on his left flank about where his hip bone is. He has been licking it and it is tender to the touch. He doesn't want me to touch him back there. I tried looking at it but I can't see anything on the knot.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It seems like it may be something causing him discomfort. I recommend that you have Jack evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. A veterinarian would be able to look at the affected area closely and see if there is a wound or anything to explain possible discomfort. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck!
