My dog has a red spot after tick removal, even on Nexgard. Is it okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 9 months and 1 day old | 23.6 lbs

I found a tick on my dog this morning. He's on nexgard for flea and tick protection and actually just had a dose 4 days ago. The tick was tiny and I think it was dead so it hadn't been on there long (it definitely wasn't there last night), but there's a red spot the size of a dime where the tick was. Should I be concerned?

No worries. This is just a tick dermatitis which is a local allergic reaction to the tick. Try applying a small amount of topical Neosporin to the area. This should resolve in a few days. Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Take care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! poor Sirius! Nexgard works by killing the tick after it attaches and ideally kills the tick before it can inject infectious organisms like Lyme. The redness is likely due to inflammation from removing the tick. I think Sirius will be fine! I hope this helps and I wish you both the best!
