My dog has ear pain at midnight. How can I calm her until the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 11 months old | 55 lbs

It's midnight and my dog is yelping and I think it's her ear. I've used warm coconut oil and cleaned her ears. What can I do to calm her down until I can get get to a vet! She won't settle down!

I hope Pippi is feeling better today! Theres not a ton of options at home to make her feel better. She needs to get medications and possibly a steroid or some other anti-inflammatory to treat the ear infection. You did well by cleaning out the ear. That probably gave her some relief. Gently massaging the ear can also help. You can also apply a cool compress to the external portion of the ear. The doctor will be able to provide medication that can really get Pippi the most comfortable the fastest. I hope this helps!
