How to prevent my adult dog from eating the puppy's extra meals?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 16 days old | 59 lbs

My dog eats 1 meal per day and iam going to have a puppy that will eat 3 times per day how do i prevent the other dog from eating from the puppy food on the other 2 more meals

I would keep Soska locked in another room while you feed your puppy the additional two meals. I would recommend feeding her twice a day, however, Twenty-four hours is a long time to go between meals, and if you divide her daily allotment of food into two equal meals fed once in the morning and once at night, she would be less likely to go after the puppy's food. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend feeding twice daily for the rest of their lives. Soska is a German Shepherd and they are at risk for bloat (gastric-dilitation-volvulous). So feeding her once daily may be a bit more risky for her. I hope this helps!

If both dogs are in good body condition and not over- or underweight this may be fine. If not I would definitely recommend measuring food and feeding twice daily for a specified period of time. Food gets taken up if it isn't finished in about 15-30 minutes. If the female still tries to eat the male's food they may need to be separated for meals.

Why the vets recommend that we should divide our dog’s meals for 3 meals if under 4 months 2 meals from 6 months and so on. However i saw many 4 months puppies eat 2 times a day and they are fine and therir stomach can take the amount in 2 meals only
Many vets recommend to feed puppies more frequently to avoid issues with low blood sugar. Some puppies are not able to regulate their blood sugar very well until they are four months old. After four months old almost all dogs can regulate their blood sugar and so feeding twice a day is fine. Many dogs eat twice a day even as puppies and do fine. It’s all individual. Poor pup. Unfortunately you will either have to crate Balto at night to prevent him from getting to the food bowl or stop using the automatic feeder that refills when empty and switch to one that just lets out at select times of day. Most automatic feeders can be set to twice daily feedings and this will reduce the chance of Balto eating the other pets food greatly. How do I transition my puppy from eating 3 times a day to eat 2? He is 6 months
You simply start giving him more food per feeding just twice a day instead of smaller meals 3 times a day. Make sure you are feeding the correct total amount between the two feedings. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend until about 4 months of age to feed three times per day (divide total daily ration in to 3). Then after 4 months divide the daily ration to twice daily, morning and night. I recommend twice daily feeding from that point on. It is not wrong to feed three times per day longer but I don't think it is necessary, unless it is a toy breed and we are worried about low blood sugar. I hope this helps!

Is it fine if there's a 12 hour gap between a pups dinner and breakfast ? Like at 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. I'm trying to feed him twice a day only to adjust his poo timings. Also, what else can I feed him other than puppy food ?
At his age it is not ideal because their blood sugar can get too low in the middle of the day. If it's unavoidable however, it is ok. Because of his high rate of growth, a quality diet labeled for puppies- especially large breed puppy- is the best thing for him. Congrats on your new little one and kisses to Max!

Unfortunately i made my dog get used to rat while iam staying with her but now iam busy so i cant stay with her so she doesnt eat well only 1/4 of her meal how i can make her eat again like before without anyone staying with her.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I understand your frustration. Soska will not choose starvation. I would put her meal down and give her a set amount of time to eat it then pick it up. Do that for several days to a week and see if she starts to finish her meals. Keep treats to a minimum. If after a week she still isn't finishing her meals then try adding water to the food to make it more tempting. You can try a different type of food after 2 weeks in case she doesn't like the food. If she continues for several weeks Soska should be evaluated by your Vet for any medical reason for her poor appetite. I hope this helps. For my dog it simply took adding water to his dry food and now he eats it without us having to sit with him.

Great question! Luna should be fed three times a day, morning, afternoon, and evening. Take the daily allotment recommended on her food bag, and divide it into three equal portions. I feed 3 times in a day .10.am chicken 3 pm puppy dry food and 9 pm puppy dry food. But last 2 days I noticed that he is not interested to eat "3 pm diet" Can I feed it 2 times a day?
Hello and thanks for using Boop by Petco! You may want to offer the 3pm meal a few more times just to double check that Tyson is no longer interested in this feeding. If he still does not want to eat that time you can discontinue that feeding. At over 4 months of age, he should be old enough to not require three feedings a day.
