Why is my dog gagging and hiccuping after eating a burger in the car?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Female | unspayed | 100 lbs

My female 95 lb great Pyrenees is in the car. We just fed her a plain hamburger from McDonald's as a treat. Ran into the store a few minutes, came back out to her greeting us when suddenly she starts gagging and making strange hiccup sounds. She doesn't appear distressed and we didn't see any obstruction in her mouth. I don't see any paleness/signs of pain/bloated stomach. What could this be ??? Very worried but don't have any money, not even savings, aside from maybe 60$ and er vet is more.

Hello, sorry to hear about Artemis. She could have some motion sickness from the car ride or she could have an upset stomach from the hamburger. I would recommend monitoring her for the rest of the night for any onset of vomiting or a decreased appetite. If she is other wise ok tomorrow, then I would not worry much more about it, however if she starts to vomiting, develops diarrhea, or has a decreased appetite, then I would have her evaluated by your veterinarian in the morning. If she begins to pant, have abdominal pain, is restless and panting, and develops vomiting, then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian tonight. Hope this helps and best of luck.
