Can I declaw my dog to stop scratching furniture and people?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 17 days old | 43 lbs

My sister wants to know if she can declaw her dog so she doesn't scratch everyone or the furniture? She's lab huskey and blue heeler and weighs about 40 pounds.

No, dogs cannot be declawed - they are much larger and heavier than cats, and the anatomy of their paws is different. She can get Soft Paws or another type of nail cover to help prevent scratching things when Athena jumps - their website is www.softpaws.com
