My cat has oozing sores and hair loss after a bite wound. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Our rescue cat has been very healthy, and has had it's shots, nutered, wormed, and has not had any flea problems. He got into a fight about 2 weeks ago, and had a chunk of hair pulled out near the tail with an area of the outer layer of the skin removed. It wasn't a deep wound, yet it did secrete white blood cells. The cat has kept it clean by licking it quite often. Two days ago we noticed that more hair was falling out on the oppisite side of the tail, and now puss is oosing from random sores

It sounds like Boots has an abscess from the bite wound. He needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. The abscess may need to be cleaned and flushed and then your vet can prescribe an antibiotic to treat the infection.
