My dog snapped at another dog after surgery. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 56 lbs

My dog was attacked this morning by a strange dog, he had surgery and he's been recovering at home since 4pm yesterday. He just woke up for the first time and snapped at our other dog who is his best friend. Should I be concerned, What should I do?

Sometimes dogs can lash out when they are in pain, and if Chief is recovering from surgery, he will likely be a bit painful. I would keep him on his own for now to allow him to recover in peace and quiet, and discuss pain medication for him with your vet if he doesn't have any at home. Please do not give Chief any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
