My kitten has FeLV. Is my other cat already infected after 2 weeks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 months and 5 days old

I have adopted two kittens from different rescues. I just found out that one tested (+) for Felv Elisa. The cats have already been together for 2 wks now and are very bonded (lots of play, grooming each other and sharing bowls, etc). What is the chance the 2nd one is already infected (she tested negative prior to being adopted by us and given that the 1st cat really confirms being (+) later on (IFA)?

Felv is highly contagious just by the sharing of water bowls. The virus is spread through the saliva, so the chances are quite high for the 2nd cat unfortunately. You can ask your vet about doing annual bloodwork and potentially anti-viral medications to help. However anti-viral meds can be quite expensive, so most owners just try to keep their kitties on a high quality dog food (i.e. Royal Canin, Wellness, Merrick, etc) for overall health.
