My chinchilla has ringworm. How long to treat & is it dangerous?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Female | unspayed

My chinchilla Julie has been diagnosed with ringworm and has at home treatment that we apply to her for the following week. How long does it usually take for this fungus to clear out? Is it dangerous? (I know it's contagious)

If left untreated, it can indeed kill a chinchilla. Treatment should actually be longer than 1 week, as there will be spores from the fungus that may become active even after all the visible effects of the fungus have disappeared. Check with your vet about how long overall you need to treat and when you need to return for a recheck with your chinchilla. Make sure you wash your hands well when touching her, and do not snuggle with her until the fungus is cured completely.
