My rabbit's ear is hot and smelly. Can I treat infection at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female

I have a rabbit that seems to have an ear infection. The ear is hot to the touch and inflamed. It is full of ear wax and smells bad. What should we do to help? We're short on money, and would rather not see a vet unless it is completely necessary.

In this case, seeing a vet is absolutely necessary. Ear infections cannot be treated at home, and if they are left untreated, they can lead to hearing loss. BunBun should see a vet as soon as possible. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com
