My dog is barking for hours and agitated, even indoors. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Treeing Walker Coonhound | Male | neutered | 8 months and 10 days old | 55 lbs

My dog has been barking and going outside constantly since about 7:00 and it is about 2:30 and hasn't stopped. I thought it might be something in the field next to us (another dog, cat, etc.) But there is nothing out there. He will run along the fence line just barking, not at anything in particular. I brought him in the house at about 11:00 and locked the doggy door, but he is still barking even when inside. I have gotten him to lie down a few times, no more than 5 minutes max. What is wrong?

It sounds like something really agitated poor Lucky! If it is daytime, checking for anything that could have caused it such as new people in the area, strange animals, etc may let you know what the problem was. If he starts up barking again, or is agitated even during the daytime, or has other strange symptoms, having a vet take a look at him may be helpful. Hounds are VERY good at smelling and hearing things that people can't (as that's what they're bred to do) so while there may not be anything in your direct area, he could still be smelling an animal nearby! Keeping Lucky distracted with a puzzle toy, new smelly piece of food to deter his nose, or a Kong stuffed with treats may help.
