Puppy's tail cut is infected with pus. What to do if no vet nearby?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have German Sheppard mix (unknown) approx. 5weeks old with a cut on her tail. 2 infected spots. One spot pouring puss. Hair is falling out with crusty substance at the base around the infected area. I performed heat compressions and wrapped in a sterile pad. I live hours from the closest vet. Please help me quick!

Poor girl. Infected areas on the skin that are draining puss almost always need oral antibiotics to successfully treat them. I am so sorry that you live so far from a vet but you need to find a way to get to that vet soon, despite the long travels. Until you can get her there try to get your hands on some Betadine and dilute it 50:50 with warm water to help slow down the progression of the infection. However to completely clear things up you will unfortunately need to get your vet involved. You can continue the wraps as needed, but the heat compressions aren't really necessary.

You will need to clean the pus, and wash the wound with a mild detergent solution, rinse it well and then loosely wrap the wound. Your puppy will need antibiotics from a veterinarian. Here is a list of veterinarians in your area: http://www.yellowbook.com/s/veterinarians/avondale-wv/
