My dog has severe allergies. Can he safely take multiple medications?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old

Just wanting a second opinion. Oliver has bad allergies and is having a terrible flare up right now. This is his third bad flare up. Every time we go to the vet she gives him Zyrtec, prednisone, and antibiotics for infection. Zyrtec wasn't working so now he is on apoquel as well as antibiotics and prednisone. Is this safe for him to take all at one time? What is your opinion on the situatio? Tired of fighting with his allergies and the constant flare ups. Thanks!

Fighting secondary skin infections and allergies is tough. Drugs like prednisone and Apoquel are used to control inflammation. In some cases, we add a drug in an effort to taper prednisone if long term immunosuppression is needed. Ideally, long term immunosuppressives should be avoided but in some cases are needed. You should consider discussing referral to a veterinary dermatologist for intradermal skin testing.
