My dog is tired, not eating, snapping, and has a lump. What happened?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 44 lbs

I have a 5yo Staffy; Milly. We attended an event last night, and had a sitter at our house, with Milly & our 2 kids. When we arrived home, she didn't run out to greet us (strange), she didn't eat at all last night (sooo weird), and didn't finish her dinner tonight. She loves her food! She's been very tired today, and snapping at the kids, who she's VERY protective of. I've noticed a hard lump to her upper LH side. Is there a chance something has happened while we were out? The kids say no.

It is possible something occurred while you were gone to cause the lump. The only way to know for sure is to have her examined by your vet and the lump needs to be aspirated (drained). The lump could be a detona, mass or even an abscess. An abscess can cause pets to have a low grade fever, lack of appetite, and moodiness. It's best to get this treated quickly with your vet and get her on a short course of antibiotics if an abscess is confirmed.
