Why does my male dog squat to pee and struggle with housebreaking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My German Shepherd pup is now almost a year old but he doesn't lift his leg to peer. He still squats like a kiddo. And he has not learned to housebreaking how much i may try.

Some dogs don't lift their leg to pee, and that's normal. You can get him checked out to see if there is a problem with his hips preventing him from lifting his leg, however, if you are concerned. I'm not sure what you have tried in terms of housebreaking him, so I would speak to the vet about the methods you have tried to housebreaking, and the vet can suggest methods you have not yet tried.

It could be that Nawaab has injured his hips or feels some pain in his back preventing him from lifting his back leg. I would have him seen by a vet to rule out a medical problem causing him to not lift up his back leg. If there is no medical cause, then he may simply not want to lift the leg. Some male dogs do squat to urinate and it's normal :-)
