My dog keeps eating moldy rawhide bones from outside. Is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 50 lbs

My dog always sneaks her rawhide bones outside and they get moldy. Will she be okay if she continues to eat/chew on them?

There are some toxins which can be produced by molds on foods and although rawhide would not be the most common source (breads, cheese and compost are most frequent sources) access to any moldy food should be reduced as far as possible. Exposure to slugs/slime should also be avoided in areas affected by lungworm angiostrongylus vasorum
