Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 37 lbs

My dog has all of the sudden shown pain in his right hip area, he is not limping walking as normal how ever when he try's to jump or be picked up he lets out a horrible cry. Should I give it a day and see how it is or should I get him to the vets for further evaluation?

Poor Boozer! Because he is walking as normal, I would give him 48-72 hours of rest to see if he comes right. No running, jumping, or playing, and I would avoid picking him up because it's painful. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. Have him rest as much as possible. If he is still painful after this time period, then I would take him into the vet. I would take him into the vet sooner, however, if he begins limping. Please do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If you are concerned he is in a lot of pain, you can take him into the vet in the morning, and the vet can prescribe a safe pain medication for him to take.
