Senior dog struggling to breathe, making noises. What to do tonight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 12 years and 1 month old | 22 lbs

I have a chihuahua duchhound mix, she's 12 years old. Her name is Buffy. Lately Buffy has been having trouble breathing, she's been stooping her neck low to the ground and extending her neck out. When she breathes, it makes a noise in her throat and nose area. She for some reason won't breathe out of her mouth. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I need to know what I should do tonight to keep her safe tonight.

Buffy could be suffering from a collapsing trachea, which can be common in small breed dogs. I think it's a great idea to take her into the vet first thing in the morning. For tonight, I would keep her quiet. If you have to take her out for a walk, use a harness instead of a collar, and keep the walk short. Just take her out to do her business, and bring her right back in.
