Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | 7 years old
I recently adopted a Westie. He turned 7 a few days before I adopted him. He's very sweet amd fully house trained. The only "problems" I would say we have is with basic commands (sit, stay, come, etc.) No serious issues when we're on walks but I do wish he would listen to me a bit more in terms of which direction we walk haha! I've read the breed is pretty stubborn, what training techniques/advice would you offer for us?

It's never too late to start obedience training. Terriers are indeed a stubborn lot and don't respond well to any negative reinforcement. Terriers respond well to reward based training, such as clicker training. I also highly recommend the books by Victoria Stillwell. Her training techniques are all based on positive reinforcement, never punishment.
