My dog is sick after neuter, saw a worm. Is it safe to deworm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 59 lbs

My dog was neutered two days ago. He has vomiting and diarrhoea which I've read can be side effects of the surgery. I noticed a worm in his vomit and am wondering whether it is safe to deworm him while he is still unwell after the surgery or should I wait? Concerned just in case his symptoms are caused by worms rather than recovered from the anaesthetic

You are correct that the vomiting and diarrhea could be side effects of the surgery, but it should have cleared up if it was two days ago. You are correct that it could be due to intestinal worms, but given that he is still sick, I think it would be best for Diesel to see a vet first before giving it to him. I would want to make sure it's safe to give to him now, and I can't say that for certain without seeing him in person. For now, I would feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts to see if that helps settle his stomach, and he should see a vet in the morning.
